Missing a tooth? Here is how an implant works, and whether it suits you.
A dental implant is a small titanium post that replaces the root of a missing tooth, with a crown fixed on top. It is one option among several, and we will go through them with you.
An implant needs enough healthy bone and gum. Placement is planned from a scan, healing takes months, and the crown is added once the implant has fused with the bone.

What happens, step by step
Look
Consultation, examination and a scan of the area.
Explain
You see the plan, the timeline, the alternatives (bridge or denture) and the fees.
Place
The implant is placed under local anaesthetic, and the gum is allowed to heal.
Restore
After healing, a crown is made and fitted. We review you regularly.
Implant, bridge or denture?
There is no single right answer. An implant does not rely on neighbouring teeth, but it takes longer and needs bone. A bridge is quicker but involves shaping the teeth beside the gap. A denture is removable and the simplest to start.
Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and gum disease affect healing. We will talk through anything relevant to you.
Questions patients ask
Does an implant hurt?
Placement is done under local anaesthetic. Some soreness for a few days is usual.
How long does the process take?
Several months from placement to the final crown in most cases, depending on healing and whether bone needs building.
Is there an age limit?
Implants are for adults whose jaw has finished growing. Health matters more than age.
What can go wrong?
Infection or failure to fuse can occur. We explain the risks for your situation and how we reduce them.
How do I look after an implant?
Brush and clean around it daily and keep your checkups. Gum health around it is essential.
