What is endodontics?
Endodontics is the dental specialty that deals with the inside of the tooth: the soft tissue called the pulp, which holds the nerve and blood supply, and the canals that run down each root. Its best-known treatment is the root canal. An endodontist is a dentist with additional training in this work.
When should you see an endodontist?
- A toothache that lingers after hot or cold, or wakes you at night
- Pain when you bite, or a tooth you think may be cracked
- A swelling or pimple on the gum near a tooth
- A root canal that has not settled or has become painful again
- You have been told a tooth must be extracted and want a second opinion
- A knock or injury to a tooth
Questions about endodontics in Lahore.
What does an endodontist do?
An endodontist diagnoses and treats problems inside the tooth, such as infection or inflammation of the pulp. The work includes root canal treatment, retreatment of root canals that have failed, surgery on the root tip, cracked teeth and dental injuries.
Is an endodontist a dentist?
Yes. An endodontist is a dentist who has completed additional specialist training in endodontics and focuses on that work, while a general dentist treats the whole mouth.
Can an endodontist save a tooth that another dentist wants to extract?
Sometimes. Many teeth advised for extraction can be treated, especially when the problem is deep decay or infection. Others cannot, for example when a root has split. A second look under the microscope tells you which applies to your tooth.
What is the difference between a root canal and retreatment?
A root canal is the first treatment of an infected or damaged tooth. Retreatment is a second root canal on a tooth that was treated before and has not healed. It takes more care, because the old filling material must be removed and missed canals found.
Do I need a referral to see an endodontist in Lahore?
