Endodontist or general dentist for a root canal? How to choose.
Both can do root canals. The difference is training, volume and the equipment used for difficult teeth.
An endodontist is a dentist with extra specialist training who focuses on root canals, retreatment and tooth-saving surgery. A general dentist treats the whole mouth and can handle straightforward root canals.
Examined under a microscope. Options and costs explained before any treatment.

See an endodontist if
- The tooth is a molar, or has narrow, curved or blocked canals
- A root canal has failed or never settled
- You have been told a tooth must be extracted and want a second opinion
- You suspect a crack, or you have had a dental injury
- You were advised an apicoectomy or surgery
A simple way to decide
Look
We examine the tooth and take X-rays.
Explain
We tell you honestly whether it is a case for a specialist.
Treat
If it is, we treat it. If your own dentist can do it well, we say so.
Return
You go back to your dentist for the final restoration.
A good dentist and a good endodontist work together
Most patients are best served when their own dentist handles checkups and restorations and an endodontist handles the complex root work. Referring a patient is a sign of a careful dentist, not a lack of one.
Dr. Haris Iqbal is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and welcomes referrals as well as patients who come directly.

Questions patients ask
Is an endodontist better than a general dentist?
Not better overall, but more specialised in one area. For a complex root canal, retreatment or a cracked tooth, that specialisation is usually worth seeking.
Does my dentist need to refer me?
At American Dental Studio, no. You can book directly, or your dentist can refer you.
Will I go back to my own dentist afterwards?
Yes. We complete the root treatment, and your dentist usually places the final crown, unless you ask us to.
Is an endodontist more expensive?
Fees depend on the tooth and the case. A specialist who gets it right first time can cost less over the life of the tooth.
